Local Heroes

Your streets were their streets

A unique war memorial in east London dedicated to local soldiers and seamen who fell in World War I has remained hidden and neglected for decades. The names of the men are inscribed on the bells of the Memorial Community Church in Plaistow. Now with the help of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund the war memorial is being restored to its former glory.

As part of the project awareness of the bells is being raised in the local area, including making the memorial accessible to local schools for children studying history. Young people are also involved in researching the families and stories of the men on the bells with the project culminating in an open day in November.

We are working closely with all teams on the project to create an engaging brand and develop a website that will document the restoration of the memorial. Young people will be trained how to manage and update the website themselves.

Currently work in progress.
